Are these classes certified by any acupuncture boards?
Rootdown is an approved continuing education provider for both the
California Acupuncture Board (CAB)
and the
National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM)
. Most of Rootdown's CEUs are approved by both boards, but on occasion an instructor will request that his/her class only be approved by one organization or the other. Each class listing specifies which board has approved it.
What is a Category 1 class?
The California Acupuncture Board categorizes its Continuing Education courses into two types, as per
(C.C.R. Title 16, section 1399.483(b))
. Category 1 courses are related to clinical matters or the actual provision of health care to patients. Examples of Category 1 courses include, but are not limited to:
Acupuncture and Asian Medicine
Western biomedicine and biological sciences
Scientific or clinical content with a direct bearing on the quality of patient care, community or public health, or preventive medicine
Courses concerning law and ethics and health facility standards
Courses designed to develop a licensee's patient education skills, including, but not limited to, patient education in therapeutic exercise techniques, nutritional counseling, and biomechanical education
Courses designed to enhance a licensee's ability to communicate effectively with other medical practitioners
Courses in acupuncture's role in individual and public health, such as emergencies and disasters
Courses in the behavioral sciences, patient counseling, and patient management and motivation when such courses are specifically oriented to the improvement of patient health
Research and evidence-based medicine as related to acupuncture and Asian medicine
What is a Category 2 class?
The California Acupuncture Board categorizes its Continuing Education courses into two types, as per
(C.C.R. Title 16, section 1399.483(b))
. California licensees may only report 5 hours of Continuing Education credit earned in Category 2 within a licensing period (every 2 years).
Category 2 courses are unrelated to clinical matters or the actual provision of health care to patients. Examples of Category 2 courses include, but are not limited to:
Practice management courses unrelated to clinical matters and direct patient care, including administrative record keeping, laws and regulations unrelated to clinical medicine, insurance billing and coding, and general business organization and management.
Breathing and other exercises, i.e. qi gong and taiji quan that are for the benefit of the licensee and not the patient
The class I'm taking says that the
California Acupuncture Board (CAB)
approval is pending. What does this mean?
Some of our classes have been approved by the
National Certificate Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM)
but the California Acupuncture Board approval hasn't been secured yet. In these cases, you can take the class for credit at the national level, and once it has been approved by the California board, you will receive credit for it from them as well. This allows you to take classes while the paper work is still in progress.
How will taking a "CAB pending" course impact my licensure?
If you take a course that is "CAB pending", the CEU hours that you have completed will not be applied towards your licensure before the date that the course is marked as "CAB Approved". For example, if your CA licensure expires on December 31st, but the course is not listed as "CAB Approved" until January 15th, you will not receive CAB CEU hours for this course until January 15th, even if you have completed the course prior to that date. Therefore, it will not be retroactively credited towards the licensure that expired on December 31st. It will, however, be credited towards the requirements for your new licensure.
How much does a class cost?
Each class costs
$23.00
/unit. For example, a class that will give you 3 CEUs will cost
$69.00
. A class that will give you only 1 CEU will cost
$23.00
.
How long do I have to complete a CEU?
You have
60
days to complete your CEU from the date of purchase. Rootdown will send you reminders one month, 2 weeks, 5 days, and 1 day prior to its expiration. This timeline is the same regardless of the length of the CEU.
Where do I keep track of the CEUs I've purchased?
Once you've purchased your first CEU, your member profile will have a new tab in it called "My CEUs". That tab has a table listing all of the CEUs you've purchased, their date of expiration, your progress in completing them, and the date you complete them.
I've purchased a CEU, but I can't figure out how to take it.
Once you've purchased a CEU, it will appear on your member profile on the "My CEUs" tab. That tab has a table listing all of the CEUs you've purchased, their date of expiration, and the date you complete them. To take the CEU, simply click on the title of the CEU, and it will begin to play in a new window.
What happens if I don't complete a CEU by the time the class expires?
If you don't complete a purchased CEU by the time the class expires, you don't receive credit for the class. Rootdown.us does not provide refunds for expired classes. You may purchase it a second time if you still want to take that particular class. Rootdown will send you reminders one month, 2 weeks, 5 days, and 1 day prior to its expiration. This timeline is the same regardless of the length of the CEU.
What does "completing" a class entail?
To receive credit for taking an online class you must complete the following requirements:
View the entire class presentation
Complete the final assessment (pass/fail requirements vary from class to class)
Complete an evaluation of the class
Can I get a refund?
If you are unhappy with your CEU purchase, please contact the Rootdown team directly at
feedback@rootdown.us
and we'll discuss the situation with you. We deal with refunds on a case-by-case basis.
How many CEUs/PDAs can I take online?
The California Acupuncture Board allows you to take up to 25 of your 50 continuing education credits online (or through distance learning). The NCCAOM does not currently have a limit on the number of continuing education credits you can take online.
I have a promo code. What do I do with it?
