For best quality the herb should be cut into slices directly from the fresh stems then dried. The traditional processed herb-wherein the stems are first cut into pieces and dried for transport, then soaked again in water, cut into slices, and dried again-has fewer known active ingredients (37%) than the directly sliced product.

Medium thick (3-5cm), hard, reddish brown pieces with fine lingitudinal ribs. The cross section shows phloem with reddish brown rings of resinous secretion, arranged alternately with reddish brown rings of resinous secretion, arranged alternately with reddish brown wood with 3-8 concentric, elongated, and sometimes excentrically-shifted rings. Numerous thin vessels should also be visible.
